St Stephen’s Michaelmas Fair on Saturday 24th September

St Stephen's
St Stephen’s Church on Uxbridge Road are hosting a Michaelmas Fair on Saturday 24th September. The fair will be held in St Stephen’s Church and the neighbouring hall, selling all sorts of gifts and goodies.

The fair is being held in aid of the St Stephen's Roof Fund, which is seeking to raise £200,000 to fix the Victorian roof, now leaking and badly in need of restoration.

The fair will include all sorts of things for sale, plus entertainment for children. And it's not too late to get involved yourself. Why not take a stall and sell some stuff?

What's on sale?
All sorts of goodies: home made foods, handmade goods, luxury knitwear, children’s clothes, toys, natural fragrances, jewellery, plants, cakes, jams and preserves.  Delicious home made food from home and abroad will also be for sale. You can also buy ‘Soul of Shepherds Bush’ bags, and there will be an opportunity to buy your very own personalised slate for the new roof.

What about children?
St Stephen's is very child-friendly and there will be a bouncy castle, face painting, games and a lucky dip to keep the kids amused.

How can local people get involved?
The Michaelmas Fair is a community event. You could take a table to sell some stuff (£30-50), or even volunteer to help run one of the stalls. You can also donate prizes to the Tombola, such as posh food, gifts and drinks, or donate a prize for the raffle. Prizes might include a meal at a local restaurant, theatre tickets, or perhaps an hour of your time doing whatever it is you do.  St Stephen's are also looking for books and CDs, cakes, jam and chutneys, potted plants and, more generally, help with all of the above. Volunteers are warmly welcomed. To get involved, contact Juliet Byford on 07958 430 948, or at juliet@ststephensroof.org

Why does St Stephen's need a new roof?
Because the old one is brittle and leaking. Juliet Byford, Roof Fund Administrator and Chair of St Stephen’s Committee, said" ‘over one quarter of the Fund’s £200,000 target has already been achieved through fantastic local support for events and a number of generous private donations’.

The Grade II listed church, when built by architect Anthony Salvin in 1850, was originally built amid fields in North Hammersmith, with only a few houses nearby. Today, the church holds a central position in the community, along with the adjacent St Stephen’s C of E Primary School.

The Church’s outreach programme includes a Monday Film Club, consisting of a lunch and afternoon film for the elderly and an evening hot meal for upwards of 100 homeless people and hostel dwellers, followed by a film.

Donations to the fund can be made through VirginMoneyGiving at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/ststephensroof or via the Roof Fund’s website, www.ststephensroof.org, which gives further details about the appeal.
